small batch ales & lagers

We want to work with freedom and flexibility when it comes to creating new beers, but we also want to be anchored by the idea that tradition can be blended with innovation. Vintage doesn’t have to mean stodgy, so we are pleased to offer a selection of core beers that pay homage to the foundation of American craft beer culture, but offer modern interpretations and an attention to detail that defines who we are as a brewery.

At Ascendant we work with a 3.5bbl brew system – this means we have the luxury of changing our beers up often. And that’s just what we intend to do. Working on the whims and creative notions of our brewing team we strive to craft unique and thoughtful beers.
KDA
Cascadian Dark Ale
6.0% abv | 65 ibu
We’ve been playing around with a Norwegian Kveik yeast strain, which has a surprising ability to act like a lager, farmhouse or just a regular old ale yeast. It all depends on the fermentation temperature. The latest brew is a Kaskadia Dark Ale. You’ll find your classic C-hops of Columbus, Centennial, and Cascade as well as some Czech Kasbek (Saaz-like with more lemon peel notes) to round it out. Yes, it is dark, but with just a touch of roast. The hops are snappy and bright. Just like winter in Portland!
My Brother’s Tripel
Belgian Tripel
8.9% abv | 25 ibu
This delightful Belgian-Style ale has a honey-like malt sweetness with a light, spicy finish. It was created to honor the family of one of our brewers as well as Brother Thomas, who created this beer style and coined the term “Tripel” at the Westmalle Brewery of Belgium in 1956.
Fighting Horses of Kentucky
Kentucky Common
5.0% abv | 20 ibu
Kentucky Common is a truly American beer style: traditionally brewed with a combination of American barley and rye malts, corn, and hops, then given a splash of those fancy imported Czech Saaz hops and fermented with a vigorous ale strain. A splash of dark malt gives the beer its color and a touch of flavor, but this beer is light and refreshing as can be. Our recipe hails from a brewer with deep ties to the region where these beers originated.
Tricky Spice
Winter Ale
5.1% abv | 17 ibu
A fruit cake inspired winter ale. The stone fruit, honey and raisin nose will invite you in to this pleasantly spiced winter offering. The use of honey and caramel malts along with a Norwegian kviek yeast and touch of Brazilian wood combine perfectly to invoke the winter spirit. Easily drinkable yet surprisingly complex considering the lack of actual fruit or spices in the recipe..
